Funding for Student Groups

Did you know that many of the University Center for International Studies international area centers have funds available for student groups? These funds can be used towards your programming expenses or specific projects. Check out the details below:

Asian Studies Center

The Asian Studies Center student group event funding is meant to allow student groups which plan on hosting an event related to Asian studies to apply for a portion of the event's cost. Awards are capped at $300. All registered student groups are eligible to apply for funding.

  • A description of the event and how it relates to Asian Studies

Center for African Studies

Student organizations can request funds for events, which are awarded on a case-by-case basis. Requests for funding should include the name of the event or project that funds are sought for, the amount requested, the target audience of the event, and a brief rationale for why the funds are needed and how they will advance understanding of African Studies. Requests can be sent to the Center Advisor, Anna-Maria Karnes, awk19@pitt.edu.

Center for Latin American Studies

The Center for Latin American Studies recently launched a Student Club Coalition. Student clubs that are a part of the Coalition can apply for up to $500 of funding from CLAS, as well as support through event promotion and information distribution in the CLAS Newsletter.

Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies

Student organizations can request funds for events, which are awarded on a case by case basis.  For more information, contact the REEES engagement coordinator, Zita Tóth-Shawgo, at zit15@pitt.edu.

European Studies Center

The European Studies Center has limited funds to assist student clubs with programming expenses or project-based requests related to the study of Europe. These are typically small, one-time awards meant to increase or facilitate meaningful student engagement, though for graduate student groups there may be the possibility for small grants to support travel abroad.  Requests for funding should include the name of the event or project that funds are sought for, the amount requested, the target audience of the event, and a brief (two paragraph) rationale for why the funds are needed and how they will advance understanding of or interest in European studies among Pitt students. In addition, please include a draft budget for your event/project.

Requests should be sent to Steve Lund, slund@pitt.edu.

Global Studies Center

The Global Studies Center welcomes opportunities to support student driven campus events that align with our mission and our certificate concentrations (world ecologies, cultural dynamics, politics and economy, health and wellbeing, global health, peace conflict and security). Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Our limited budget permits us to match funds (typically up to $200) for events that complement and amplify our existing programming.  Requests for support should briefly explain the event’s connection to GSC’s mission and global concentrations, its anticipated audience and impact, and the proposed schedule. We will respond to all requests within one week of receipt.  Recipients will be required to submit a small report including participation audience and numbers.
